Does this sound familiar?

You’ve been loving your practice, feeling good in your body and all that yoga has made you so well in yourself that you’ve conceived a new life! It’s wonderful – then week 6 comes along and the hormones hit, fatigue, nausea and more, and you’re wondering if you’ll ever get back on the mat. You’re excited about your pregnancy, you want to feel like yourself again, but continuing your yoga practice seems like a bit of a minefield to navigate.

And even when you feel up to it the questions surface;

Can I still go to [insert favourite] class?

When do I tell my teacher?

Is this still ok when I’m pregnant?

The thing is, if you are generally well, the best modern research has GP’s, OB’s and Midwives recommending that during your pregnancy you continue the same low impact exercises you enjoyed when you conceived. The continuity maintains your fitness, well-being and offers so many benefits to you and baby. But often you may fall out of your flow because…

  • Your teacher doesn’t have time or pre-natal experience to support you.
  • You lose stamina or confidence when your pregnancy symptoms interrupt your routine.
  • You acquire a preventable injury or strain.
  • Your body feels unfamiliar, making you unsure.
  • You’re not ready to tell anyone and really don’t want to be singled out for being pregnant in class.

Practice in Pregnancy dispels those issues by giving you the awareness you need, when you need it and troubleshooting all the little hiccups you can expect through all three trimesters.

For a little more than the price of a drop in class we will send you the yoga drills, breath practices and knowledge you need, trimester by trimester, to practice consistently and safely in your regular routine!

Here’s what changes when you have the right support

In Practice in Pregnancy, you’ll first get the cues to understand what’s changed in your body, helping you to feel for yourself during the subtle and not so subtle shifts, the impact of pregnancy on the way your body moves and responds.

With that clearly explained, you’ll be offered holistic yoga practices you can incorporate into your day to day life to maintain the strengths your practice has cultivated in you to date. With short, manageable yoga drills and practices that are fun and engaging, you’ll keep continuity in your practice even when getting to class seems a bit out of reach!

From trimester to trimester these practices will build upon each other, giving you confidence to practice at home or in studio in every stage. By the time you’ve recovered – you may even find your body stronger and more resilient than it was pre-pregnancy!

Why I created Practice in Pregnancy

I built Practice in Pregnancy after years of supporting pregnant and post-partum women in “regular” yoga classes since I qualified as a teach in 2016. It struck me that often women felt they “had to” resign from class as soon as they discovered they were pregnant for no reason even though many could continue right up to their third trimester. With my qualifications, I knew how to modify for pregnancy, what to keep an eye on and how to get ensure those women’s comfort, but with little turn over time between classes and interruptions to their attendance for morning sickness & fatigue, sometimes it just wasn’t possible!

When my own first pregnancy started in 2021, I was teaching 7 classes a week as my main employment. I had to be able to do yoga for three trimesters, but had no felt experience of what that would be like. I began researching, experimenting and consulting more experienced mothers and maternity experts and found myself teaching my last classes 39 weeks in and still demonstrating the vast majority of the sequences my non-pregnant clients were doing! To my surprise, by the time I came back to my mat postpartum I was stronger in my practice than ever.

After my own pregnancy, I could see exactly where clients got stuck in their practice and the simple solutions that could support them better. I began working more closely with my pregnant clients with only the wish I could give them more to work with between classes or when they were with other teachers! Finally when I started my second pregnancy in 2025, it was time to put it all together so everyone could enjoy the practice they love throughout the pregnancy journey.

Hi, I’m Alice

I’ll be walking beside you on this journey!

I’m a mother of 2, founder of a thriving yoga studio, Macha Yoga, and a life-long “woman’s woman”.

With 10 years professional experience, I’m also a Registered Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance with a Diploma in Yoga Therapy, and a Masters in Philosophy from the School of Religions in Trinity College for my dissertation on yoga. I’m also a Reiki & Akasha Seichim Master & Trainer, with cert in (and a major love for) Anatomy & Physiology. I’ve always been deeply passionate about all things women’s health, childrearing and sexuality and absolutely adore gaining new knowledge and sharing it with whoever will listen!

I put together Practice in Pregnancy after my own two pregnancies and supporting more women than I can keep track of in their pregnancies in yoga classes over my 10+ year career. I wanted you to feel confident, capable and like “yourself” continuing your practice as normal. Whether you’re one of my in person clients using this as a companion to your classes with me, someone practicing elsewhere with another teacher or a solo yogi practicing at home independently – I hope this course will give you inspiration and empowerment in this chapter of your life!

FAQs:

Will this prepare me for birth?

Yes & no. This is not an antenatal course or a yoga for birth course. It is a guide for people who are pregnant and want to do yoga. A solid yoga practice in itself is a great preparation for birth but this will not replace your antenatal education or demonstrate labour techniques.

I feel so overwhelmed by all the things I have to do before the birth, is this going to be more homework?

I hear you! Think of this not as a homework to do, but as a companion to support you on the journey you’re on already. This course is not for the birth, not for the baby, its for you. You as the person who is navigating this changing body and needs to live well in it.

Is it safe to do yoga while pregnant?

All medical research, observation and anecdote says it is – provided you know what to modify and practice within your range. This course makes the knowledge to modify easily accessible. Always check with your midwife, GP or OB if you are unsure due to any existing medical condition and seek advice if pregnancy symptoms change.

You’ve mentioned injuries during pregnancy, what are these?

During pregnancy it is common to over stretch and develop temporary conditions such as pelvic girdle pain & sciatica, improper yoga practice can be a contributing factor to this which is why its important to acquire the guidelines in this course to practice effectively without risking injury.

I’m signed up for pre-natal yoga, do I need this course?

If you are doing a pre-natal yoga course, that’s brilliant. If they are an accredited pre-natal yoga teacher they will no doubt be singing from the same hymn sheet as me on this course! But in my experience these classes are often focused very strongly around birth preparation, they are only available at limited times, are costly and can feel a little like “going back to basics”. If you are someone who likes to do multiple classes per week, enjoys yoga at home (online or self-practice) or you have a strong practice you should be able to continue your existing yoga routine – this course makes that possible.

I feel dreadful since getting pregnant and I don’t have the energy to do my normal level of exercise – will this course help?

Yes! Nothing in the course is very hard or very complicated for the days you feel tired. Everything is broken down so it’s manageable if energy or time are limited. Start with the breathing practices in bed and build from there, things might just turn around quicker than you think.

When should I start the course?

In an ideal world – as soon as you find out you’re pregnant! You’ll get the most out of the course if you get started any time before the 20 week mark when the bump starts popping.

Some golden rules for practising yoga during your pregnancy

In this module you’ll get a non-overwhelming overview of what to expect and look out for in your practice. Remember your body starts changing as soon as you become pregnant and many aches and pains are seeded in early pregnancy before developing in later stages. Practice smart with awareness & knowledge.

Trimester 1

Build breath capacity… create relaxation, length and space to make space for the baby

Energy is low, the body is adapting to rapidly shifting hormones. It’s the perfect time to start switching your focus from engagement and control to release and surrender as you keep your body spacious for optimal mobility for all 40+ weeks.

Trimester 2

Increase your stamina and resilience… maintain balance as your centre of gravity shifts

Often the most enjoyable stage of pregnancy, trimester 2 is about increasing your stamina and resilience to keep up with your growing baby. We’ll work on maintaining your breath capacity as your diaphragm comes under more pressure, keeping a wide range of motion, staying balanced as your centre of gravity shifts, and building the pelvic floor awareness and abdominal control that will serve you well into birth and beyond.

Trimester 3

Continue to practice within the range of your mobility… relax and mobilise the body to help with sleep, swelling and energy

As your bump reaches its full size, this module is about continuing to practice within your range of mobility while reducing tiredness, swelling and general aches and pains through a balanced practice. We’ll focus on relaxing and mobilising the body to support better sleep and help your body prepare for labour — with pauses, props and modifications built in throughout, and an attitude of kindness towards your changing body.

What’s Next/4th Trimester

Focus on nutrition, rest, and relaxation… deep breathing is a great way to work on your postpartum recovery

Congratulations — you’ve made it! This final module supports you in the early postpartum weeks, focusing on nutrition, rest and relaxation as you adjust to life with your baby. Your body remembers how to put itself back together if you give it a chance, all you need are rest and breath right now! Reconnect with your core & pelvic floor, restore your energy and calm your nervous system after birth (before instagram or pinterest leave you feeling like you need to get up and do wall squats and bird dogs!)
